WSSM Churches Together - Church Schools

In common with so many English villages, these communities have benefited for centuries from the presence of church-founded schools. Our largest is Scargill (Voluntary Aided) Primary School in West Hallam, which is among the largest primary schools in Derbyshire; our smallest is Mapperley (Voluntary Controlled) Primary School with just two classes. Stanley St. Andrew's and Stanley Common Primary Schools, which are both Voluntary Controlled, lie in between with four and three classes respectively. All four schools have a close relationship with their local churches. To find out more, you can read their own stories on the individual church pages on this site.

Scargill's Educational Foundation is the full name of a local charity, founded in 1662 by former Rector of West Hallam John Scargill, and commonly known as the Scargill Trust. The main focus of its work is in support of Scargill C of E (Aided) Primary School, but it also funds additional benefits (i.e.over and above LEA provision) for the other local village schools, and makes book grants to local young people in further and higher education. The Rector of West Hallam chairs the Foundation.
